God’s Great Faithfulness

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21–23).

God’s great faithfulness is shown all around us. Each season has its beauty but it seems that autumn is wrapped in glory. In autumn the moon and the sunsets are so beautiful and the world all around us is a glorious array of gold, rust, and scarlet. The very fact that autumn is here is a sign of God’s continual faithfulness. We do not doubt that when we plant Zinnia seeds in the spring we will get Zinnias—not Marigolds. The magnetic needle always points north, birds fly south in the fall, the sun always comes up in the east. Season follows season—after winter the spring, after summer the autumn. In the winter the world seems to be asleep but in spring the seeds force to open at God’s call. They reach maturity in the summer and in the fall we again gather the seed. From bud to blossom, from flower to fruit, from seed again the bud. We trust God for this because this is how God made it to be and it will not change. This is our Father‘s world and He holds the world with an eternal faithfulness.

The psalmist writes, “When I consider The Heavens the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars which Thou has ordained, what is man that Thou art mindful of him?” The sun and the moon follow their courses, they are established forever. In Psalm 89, a very rich chapter about God’s faithfulness, we read that God made a covenant that as long as the sun and the moon endure He will have His church in this world. “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations” (Deut. 7:9). God is mindful of man! What a tremendous comfort! Though many things change, God changes not. He is faithful, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. “I am the Lord; I change not.”

This autumn when we behold God’s beautiful handiwork and we are moved to say “My God how great Thou art” let us also remember HOW FAITHFUL!

“Summer and Winter, Springtime and Harvest, Sun, Moon and Stars in their courses above. Join with all nature in manifold witness, To Thy Great faithfulness, Mercy and Love.”
