THE CHURCH IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY VOL. VII ELECT FROM EVERY NATION, by L. Praamsma, Paideia Press, St. Catherines, Ontario, 1981, 289 pp., paper. Reviewed by the editor.

These books are the first of a 4 volume survey of church history in the Dutch language and the last (vol. 7) of a translation of this work into English. In them Dr. Louis Praamsma, retired Christian Reformed pastor, who has taught Church History both in the Netherlands and at Calvin Theological Seminary in the U.S. shows his wide and masterful acquaintance with this vast field of study and at the same time presents highlights of this field as a fascinating storyteller. In dealing with various periods and personalities he shows a fine sense of judgment, pointing out strengths and weaknesses of movements and their leaders. He deals appreciatively and sympathetically with a variety of viewpoints and at the same time consistently draws his conclusions as he evaluates what is happening from the point of view of a staunch Calvinistic Christian.

In the confusions of the church and world in our time few things are more needed than dependable guides. Knowing the history of the Lord’s guidance of His church through the struggles of the past can be enormously helpful in seeking the proper course in our time. Dr. Praamsma, the Christian historian, proves himself a rare guide in tracing the past course and using that experience of God’s church to illuminate the way in our present problems. And the reader, whether somewhat acquainted with church history or not, may find reading these volumes an entertaining as well as profitable experience.
