Patrick of Ireland, Simonetta Carr. Illustrated by Matt Abraxas. Christian Biographies for Young Readers. Grand Rapids: Reformation Heritage Books, 2023. 63 pages. $12.00.
Mrs. Carr leads us through Patrick’s life at a gentle pace, presenting along the way a backdrop of carefully chosen historical detail. This historical detail greatly enriches the value of this biographical work, both through the written word and in the many photos of places and artifacts.
There are many legends of Saint Patrick, a few of which are treated here with gentle firmness; and it is refreshing to find, not a mere folk hero with a few tawdry “miracles” to impress the superstitious, but rather a portrait of truly missional Christianity unfolding through Mrs. Carr’s skillful craftsmanship. Meticulously researched, this vivid depiction of an eventful life will engross young readers while giving an accurate picture of that which has often been fictionalized and dramatized. Patrick’s courageous faithfulness to God’s calling is emphasized, as is his commitment to following the Lord even in the face of persecution.
This reviewer could have wished for more pointed reference to the providences of this most unusual life, and the remarkable fruit of one man’s labors—it is not often in history we see an entire people brought to Christ through the work of one man—and yet, the almost journalistic simplicity of Mrs. Carr’s style carries an impact all its own. We are grateful a simplified translation of Patrick’s own “Confession” is included, with his highly developed theological treatment of the Trinity, and we commend the scholarship which chose to briefly highlight several pivotal outcomes of Patrick’s ministry, including Ireland’s role as keeper of Christian culture during the Dark Ages.
The author’s clear prose is accessible reading for elementary aged children, and lends itself also to reading aloud. We look forward to the next installment in this invaluable series and suggest titles from the series as excellent gifts for children and grandchildren.
Highly recommended.
