MANY INFALLIBLE PROOFS by Henry M. Morris. Creation Life Publishers, San Diego, California, 1974. $6.95. Reviewed by Rev. Nicholas De Vries, Ripon, California.

The author – He is identified as “Henry M. Morris, Ph.D. Director: institute for Creation Research, and Professor of Apologetics at Christian Heritage College.” He is further designated in the “Foreword” by John C. Whitcomb, Jr. as “One of the greatest Champions of an historically and Scientifically dependable Bible, in the world today. While carrying a heavy load of university teaching, research, and administration in the field of civil engineering for over thirty years, he at the same time produced thirteen books on “Scientific Creationism . . . With a rare combination of humble trust in the written Word of God, and astounding mastery of the sciences they relate to the problems of origins, Henry Morris has sb shed away at the ramparts of uniformitarian, evolutionary, geology and biology for three decades with tireless determination. We may say without fear of exaggeration, that God has caused him to come to the Kingdom, as it went at such a time as this.”

Personal Testimony – I have seen the man, solid and strong, and I’ve heard him, and would say that among present-day defenders of the Christian faith he stands, “tall and strong.” He spoke to my heart as well as to my mind. The author’s purpose – He states, “The purpose of the handbook is to survey in systematic and comprehensive fashion the “many infallible proofs” of the unique truth and authority of Biblical Christianity, together with a refutation of its alleged fallacies, and a reconciliation of its alleged discrepancies. It will be seen that not only is there no mistake or contradiction in the Bible, but also [that] there are innumerable  evidences of its divine inspiration and authority. Not only are there no legitimate objections to a true Christian theology, but rather there are overwhelming evidences that Christianity is uniquely and completely true.” “As a matter of fact the entire subject of evidence is almost completely the domain of Christian evidences. Other religions depend on subjective experience, and blind faith, tradition and opinion. Christianity stands or falls upon the objective reality of gigantic supernatural events in history and the evidence thereof. This fact is in itself an evidence of the truth.” Author’s method of presentation – He is intent on setting forth concrete reasons for accepting the Bible as God’s Word, and Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He speaks of these reasons as “many infallible proofs.” These are the evidences with which he supports and defends the cardinal truths of the Christian faith. And these truths of the Christian faith. And these truths or propositions he takes up for discussion in such chapters as:

The Uniqueness of Christianity The Unique Birth of Christ The Miraculous life of Christ The Resurrection of Christ Scientific fallacies of Evolution The Authenticity of the New Testament The Authenticity of the Old Testament The Death of Christ The Bible and Science

In his treatment of these subjects Morris reveals an uncompromising loyalty to the Word of God. Listen to some of his comments on Scientific Fallacies of Evolution:

“One of the strangest paradoxes in the history of science is that a theory so barren of scientific proof as evolution could be so universally accepted as scientific fact. Science is knowledge and the essence of the scientific method is experimentation and observation. Since it is impossible to make the observations or experiments as to the origin of the universe, the origins of the earth, the origin of life, or the origin of any of the basic kinds of organism (not to mention the origin of the consciousness of the soul), the very definition of science ought to preclude use of the term when talking about evolution. Nevertheless by far the most influential argument against the Bible is the widespread belief that science has proved evolution and therefore disproved the Bible account of creation. Consequently. this chapter will be devoted solely to showing that evolution is necessarily outside the scope of science in the real sense . . .” The author ends the chapter with the words, “The simplest, most logical model of origins is still that of special creation.”

Why defend the Word of God? – But why should it be necessary to “defend” the Word of God? Are we not told in Hebrews 4:12, “For the Word of God is living and active, and sharper, than any two-edged sword.” Cant the Word take care of itself?

The author tells us, “At the same time, it is a serious mistake to teach, as many do, that the use of Christian evidences (in addition to prayer and concern and the judicious use of Scripture) is unnecessary. In a world of almost universal hostility to Biblical Christianity, where unbelief in the Bible is exceeded by ignorance of the Bible, it is obvious that to most people at least, the testimony of Scripture and a personal experience alone, will be pointless.”

“Those who feel that only the Bible need be used in witnessing rely on the mystical power supposedly residing in the words of Scripture themselves.”

“The lassitude of Christians in contending intelligently and earnestly for the Faith during the past century, especially for the doctrine of special creation, has been one primary cause of the almost universal drift into modernistic apostacy and a secularized society. This drift has occurred in spite of the widest dissemination of the written Word, as well as the preached and spoken word, that the nation and the world have ever known.”

Evaluation: An excellent Handbook.” One of the best. Should be fine for the upper high school and college levels. Written to be understood. Also fine for Bible Study groups and all pastors and Bible teachers. May it have wide acceptance and be instrumental in reviving the faith of many.
